Bullying: Taking Action Against This Intentionally Behaviour
Working with young learners could sometimes be a hard task. The story took place at a primary school where one of the learners found difficulties when working in small groups. This situation had become intolerable for the student because there were some others who generally laughed at him because of his appearance. When Mrs. Jones, their teacher, realized about this student’s terrible concern, she immediately knew that a solution had to be found. For this reason, she prepared many activities that involved the affective depth approach, which required individual, pair and group work. Those activities were specially designed for students to reflect on their behaviour and encouraged them to analyse their attitudes toward others.
During a specific lesson, Mrs. Jones included a multimedia resource. Learners were about to watch a brief clip from the movie Wonder. While watching the video, the students had to take notes and indirectly reflect on their own experience. At the end of this lesson, the group of learners should share their feelings and thoughts. This activity had a great impact because in the tape the main character was a boy who had many pathological conditions that affected his physical appearance. Despite this, he made a distinguished effort to be part of the group. Mrs. Jones’ learners were able to notice their own partner's situation and changed their attitude towards him positively.
